A: Put Honey On The End Of Your Chopsticks.  The Fly Sticks To It And It’s Yours.

At first, to most people, the task seems very difficult.  Once they see the answer they go, “ha ha, of course!, how simple!”.  The same thing applies to learning a new skill of any sort, whether it be learning a new language, bike riding, martial arts, weightlifting, maintaining a proper diet, etc… even art, which can seem so abstract at times, has a base in practicality - such a diverse array of disciplines yet all having the same common denominator of common sense.

When people start going to the gym they most often don’t have the tools of how to exercise efficiently.  The paradoxical thing about it is that it’s very simple yet quite scientific.   Understanding the basics before you get started is essential to a long life of productive exercise with minimal risk of injury.  When thinking back to the chopstick riddle, honey can be considered as education.  Someone figured out that honey, not salt or dirt, attracts flies… and when they land on it to eat it they get stuck to it, thus making it easier for you to catch the fly.  With exercise of any sort, this philosophy of knowing the proper techniques, protocol, methods, etc will drastically accelerate your road to success.  Saved hours in the gym and on the playing field, tools to keep a better diet with less stress, how to organize your time – all leading to much faster results with MUCH less chance of injury, failure or reverting back to old habits.

In 16 years of going to the gym and 10 years of fitness training, I’ve seen too many silly mistakes happen.  The worst was a husband breaking his wife’s arm because he took 4 45lb plates off one side of a squat rack.  The plates on the other side quickly flopped, slid off the barbell and onto his wife’s forearm while she was exercising on a machine beside him.  This was simple physics yet he was trying to squat 4 plates per side (which was not done through his full range of motion) – a perfect example of a lack of education.

Personal trainers are worth the investment when starting a fitness quest and for keeping you on track.  We devote our lives to making sure people reach their fitness goals through constant studying, career development and personal practice.   For me, it’s a passion.  To this day, I still take my university textbooks to the gym to review while I do my cardio.  I urge anyone who genuinely wants to progress with their goals to educate themselves constantly.  Health is a lifelong commitment and education is as well.  Studying about fitness will only move you forward and increase your passion for it.  If you need help or have questions, look to the health and fitness professionals near you.  We’re always happy to help.
