~ Educate. Inspire. Empower ~

I am thrilled to be a new contributor to the WHS blog.  As a naturopathic doctor, it is both my passion and my privilege to share what I know about optimizing health and wellness…naturally.  The term “doctor” actually comes from the Latin word “docere” which means to teach.  When I became a naturopathic doctor, I took an oath to educate my patients on ways to lead healthier lives, to make healthful lifestyle decisions and to empower people towards positive and sustainable change – whether it is during a patient visit, through articles on this site or by way of example.

I am a Canadian-trained naturopathic doctor living in Shanghai.  My training includes an honours bachelors degree from the University of Toronto and a four-year Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degree from the fully accredited Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto, Canada.  I have also completed an externship program at the National Hospital of Traditional Medicine in Hanoi, Vietnam.  The therapies I use include Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupuncture, nutritional counseling and nutraceuticals (vitamins & minerals), herbal medicine, hydrotherapy, physical medicine, homeopathy, and lifestyle counseling.

I bring to you my perspectives as a doctor of naturopathic medicine, a Canadian, an avid traveler, a mom, an advocate of the family kitchen, a resident of Shanghai (who enjoys street food every so often) and as someone who believes that empowering individuals to make healthy and balanced lifestyle choices is the cornerstone to achieving one’s health and wellness goals.  Because it is all about balance.

Stay tuned for my 1st blog post on the topic of What exactly is Naturopathic Medicine?

Xin nian kuai le!

Yours in Health,

Dr. Christine Nguyen, ND

Need help....
written by Ruhi, February 10, 2012
My husband and I will be in Beijing for a few hours this weekend.  We are looking for homeopathic or herbal remedies for gout. We are traveling through and plan to stop by the san li run area.  He has been taking some cherry extract (and from time to time an antiflamatory like ibuprofen) but we think there must be some other method that can release the uric acid in his body faster.  He drinks lots of water, exercises, and eats healthy.  A typical meal for us is chicken breast, homemade pinto beans, and spinach or some other leafy greens.  He had a gout episode more than five years ago due to stress but this time perhaps there is another reason.  Years ago it was quite painful.  Now it is just uncomfortable and since we are not in town long enough to see a health practitioner we need a quick solution that can ease the discomfort.  Thanks very much. I can be reached at ruhizandra@gmail.com....
